WHAT: Engineering Projects in Community Service: An EPICS Workshop at N.C. A&T.
WHEN & WHERE: Friday, August 29, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Specific location at A&T to come.
OPEN TO: All North Carolina A&T State University and North Carolina State University faculty members.
RSVP: By August 27 to Dr. Keith Schimmel. No charge for workshop or lunch.
DETAILS: Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) is a solution to two problems. First, many engineering graduates lack the real-world skills needed for project management. Second, many non-profit organizations do not have funding for the professional engineering services they need to design displays and exhibits or keep relevant databases.
The solution: Use the skills of undergraduates to provide services to local non-profit organizations. Founded at Purdue University in 1995, the program has grown its original five project teams to 25 teams that include over 400 students. EPICS is now operating at about 15 universities across the United States, including Arizona State University.
PRESENTERS: Dr. Carla Zoltowski, co-director of the EPICS Program at Purdue University. Dr. Zoltowski’s academic and research interests include human-centered design learning and assessment, service-learning, ethical reasoning assessment, leadership, and assistive technology. Dr. Scott Shrake, EPICS Director at Arizona State University. He oversees all aspects of the program, including teaching multiple sections of the EPICS Gold courses.
