For years, the pedestrian tunnel connecting the Aycock neighborhood to downtown wasn’t a much of an asset to the historic area. Varying degrees of city maintenance left it at various times dark, graffiti-covered or simply scary.
When the neighborhood decided to make the passage more inviting, they didn’t have to look far for just the right artist to lead the project: Darlene McClinton of the N.C. A&T Department of Visual and Performing Arts. A&T is just a short walk away down Yanceyville Street.
McClinton and her students were a great find for Aycock: McClinton is an accomplished artist, and she also grew up in the neighborhood.
