USDA’s No. 2 official to speak Wednesday

The second-in-command at the U.S. Department of Agriculture will visit North Carolina A&T on Wednesday to discuss supporting farmers and building local food economies.  Deputy Secretary Kathleen A. Merrigan also will highlight USDA opportunities for researchers and recent graduates.

Merrigan oversees the daily operation of the agency and its $149 billion budget.  She was one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” for 2010.  (For her bio, click here.)

She will speak at 10 a.m. in the Webb Hall auditorium.  Merrigan’s visit is sponsored by the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, a Goldsboro-based consortium with research and Cooperative Extension facilities operated jointly by N.C. A&T, N.C. State and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

DORED staff wears red today to help raise awareness of heart disease in women

The staff of the Division of Research & Economic Development is decked out in red from shoes to ties today to show its support for National Wear Red Day.  The annual event is organized by the American Heart Association as part of its American Heart Month to raise awareness of heart disease in women.  Details on the national event are here
